Who left The Great British Bake Off this week?
Spoilers ahead!
It was pâtisserie week on the Great British Bake Off this week – but it was also the semi-final, meaning the bakes were tough and standards were high.
For this week’s Bake Off theme, the Great British Bake Off 2021 contestants were tasked with making patisserie-style layered slices, a regional French classic and a themed banquet display made up of entremets desserts.
Paul Hollywood gave not one, not two, but three handshakes during the Signature challenge to everyone except poor Jürgen.
Jürgen managed to redeem himself during the technical challenge however, with Chigs now the one in trouble by coming in fourth place.
It was all to play for in the Showstopper then – and with Chigs and Crystelle’s banquets both receiving overwhelming praise, it seemed as if both Giuseppe and Jürgen were in trouble.
Here’s everything you need to know about who left Great British Bake Off this week.
Who left The Great British Bake Off this week?
Week Nine – Jürgen
Jürgen became the ninth celebrity to leave the Bake Off tent.
Jürgen had been consistently praised and won Star Baker three times, but Paul and Prue decided it was time for him to go during pâtisserie week. Jürgen had a bad start in the Signature challenge when he was the only contestant not to receive a handshake from Paul, and was not saved by his victory during the Technical Challenge.
“‘I feel kind of OK, I kind of saw it coming, I think the others are more shocked than I am. It has been incredible and I have really enjoyed being here. I have made friends for life, and I will be with them in spirit,” he said.
Week Eight - Lizzie
Lizzie became the latest contestant to be eliminated from Bake Off.
While she finally managed to give the judges the finesse they'd been asking for with her gluten-free cake, which she created to celebrate her Special Educational Needs (SEN), unfortunately Prue and Paul decided it was the end of her Bake Off journey.
"Do you know what, I feel really proud of myself, I am really happy I am a quarter-finalist and I sound dead Scouse now because I am crying. It’s such an amazing experience to have met the people that I have met and learned everything. I am proud and these are happy tears. I can’t wait to go and walk my dog to be honest!" she said.
Following the competition, Great British Bake Off star Lizzie got a tattoo of the judges’ critique.
Week Seven - George
George was the seventh contestant to leave Bake Off.
Despite impressing with his ambitious Showstopper, which the judges praised him for, the 34-year-old struggled earlier in the day with his Signature and Technical bakes.
‘‘It’s bittersweet but I am proud of my Showstopper. Speaking to my family they are just so proud that I have even managed to get into the tent, so Week Seven – I am fine with that," he said following his exit.
"I couldn’t believe I was there at Week Seven. I thought I might go at Week One. I think my flavours saved me, but my timings always let me down as I was much slower than the other bakers. However my wife has said I have got faster after being in Bake Off boot camp!"
Week Six - Amanda
Met Police detective Amanda became the sixth contestant to leave Bake Off after struggling with her terrine pie. Amanda suffered a soggy bottom and her pie fell apart before she could present it to the judges.
"I really didn’t want to go but am feeling pretty good about myself that I got over the half-way mark. I will make the choux pastry doughnuts again (the Judges just didn’t like my traditional Greek rose flavouring)," she said.
"And even though there were two Greeks in the tent our Baklavas weren’t that great – I hope that is the first and last time I will have to make one of those. And finally my terrine pie disintegrated as I tried to take it out of the tin. Chigs came to help me but even he couldn’t rescue the disaster."
Week Five - Freya
Psychology student Freya became the fifth contestant to leave the Bake Off tent.
Speaking of her time on the show, she said: "Genuinely I think it’s been the best experience of my life. I was feeling the lack of experience quite a lot, I am 19 and I feel very proud to have kept up. To get to Week Five and do it vegan, I really feel that I have done what I wanted to."
Paul added: "Freya has done an amazing job. She is 19 years old, vegan baking and she came half way through.’ He then said to Freya: ‘You should be really proud of yourself."
Week Four - Maggie
Maggie became the fourth contestant to leave Bake Off.
She says she knew her time on the show was up when her showstopper in Dessert Week did not go according to plan – same too with her sticky toffee pudding.
Speaking of her time on the show, she said: “The whole thing has been such good fun, just to have been part of it is has been a complete joy. To stay for four weeks comes pretty high on a personal level. Nothing can beat delivering a baby and bringing a new life into the world, but it comes a close second.
Being in the Bake Off tent meant sometimes I was hanging off the edge a bit too much, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I didn’t think at the age of 70 I would be doing something like this, but I thoroughly recommend it to anyone of a similar age. I have achieved a lot in my life, but I think this is one of the unforgettable experiences that I will always treasure.”
Week Three - Rochica
Rochica became the third contestant to leave Bake Off.
While the judges enjoyed her focaccia, Rochica came last in Technical challenge and her Showstopper wasn't well executed.
Speaking of her time on the show, she said: "I have learned not to put so much pressure on myself and have more fun! My best moment was being able to fix my apple cake although I wasn’t happy with the appearance.
"I was pleased to finish all the brandy snaps in the Biscuit Signature and I think that was my favourite challenge overall as I was happy with how they tasted . Worst moments were when Paul said my bread Showstopper looked like 1.5 hours work instead of four hours. And of course, the Technical Challenges in weeks two and three – do I even know how to work an oven?!"
Week Two - Jairzeno
Jairzeno became the second contestant to leave Bake Off this year. Although he had big ideas for his Signature brandy snaps, the judges weren't pleased with the outcome, and they dubbed his Showstopper boat "rough and ready".
"In the first challenge I really did run out of time and I was rushing around, although I finished it didn’t have my usual presentation. In the technical I overbeat the mixture and that didn’t go in my favour.
"The mast on my boat fell down in the Showstopper and I lost a sail so it didn’t look as great at the end as all the other Bakers," he said. "I kind of knew there and then it was time to go.
"In the future I will make biscuits that don’t involve engineering!" Jairzeno added.

Week One - Tom
Tom was the first baker to be sent home, after struggling with his Showstopper.
Speaking in an interview after his exit, Tom said: "I came fifth in the Technical, which wasn’t too bad, but my Showstopper was a bit of a disaster. I wanted something that would celebrate my love of classical music, so I made a three tiered lemon and almond sponge cake of a concert hall.
"The judges said that for an anti-gravity cake it didn’t really defy the laws of gravity. I was unsure of my design in the first place and then when I was running out of time I knew that I wouldn’t finish it, and I really think I had missed the brief on that one!"
You'll be missed Tom!
